This listing is for a billet of Pacific Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) from southern Washington state. It came from my neighbor's tree that was removed last year, which I milled and then had kiln dried. Dimensions:
L=669mm x W=201mm x D=41mm (L=26&1/4" x W=8" x D=1&5/8") weight = 3.1kg (7lbs)
Moisture content (measured on Orion 930):
11.5% avg. Endgrain sealed with Anchor Seal 2.
Notes:
Side A has a good bit of quilting figure covering about 50% of the face, while side B has minimal figure but has pinkish heartwood, unique to Big Leaf Maple, compared to its counterpart Rock or Sugar maple. It has a Janka hardness around 850, making it harder than Douglas Fir (620) and softer than a hard Maple (1450). It is easy to work with hand tools, though to avoid tear-out in the figured areas, very sharp blades are needed. If high speed cutters are used, the wood can burn if the cutters are not aligned or cleaned.
Defects:
Mineral stains (see bluish areas on sides A and B), shallow splits and dents (side A and side grain), rough sawn areas on B.
